Singapore's Swiss Standard of Living

Switzerland - A Role Model
2.	Switzerland has long been regarded as a role model for Singapore. As far back as 1984, the government set the vision for Singapore to achieve the Swiss standard of living by 1999. The vision inspired Singaporeans to find out more about Switzerland and to learn from your systems and practices.
3.	Over the years, many Singaporeans have become familiar with Switzerland (your famous brands and famous products) as more Singaporeans travel to Europe for vacations. In the past year, an estimated 50,000 Singaporeans visited Switzerland and about the same number of Swiss came to Singapore for business and tourism. We expect the numbers to grow.
4.	Switzerland is an important economic partner for Singapore. Based on the latest available statistics, Switzerland is the 14th largest exporting country to Singapore and the 8th largest investor. Singapore, on the other hand, is Switzerland's first trading partner among the ASEAN countries and Switzerland's third largest export market in Asia.
5.	Singapore is a small country but like Switzerland we have not been constrained by our size. In fact, some people would say we have turned our size to advantage. Because we are small, we have always adopted a global perspective. We have no natural resources but we have trained our people to be the No. 1 Workforce in the world according to the BERI Report. And because we are small and compact we can be more efficient and move faster.
6.	Indeed by adopting a 'Singapore Unlimited' mindset, we have been able to punch above our weight. In less than 40 years since our independence, our GDP has grown 24 times. Our per capita income has increased 40 times and like Switzerland is now one of the highest in the world. Our international trade has grown 60 times and is now 3 times our GDP. We attract some 8 million tourists a year and some 8000 MNCs have made Singapore their second home. Our achievements belie our size. Indeed we are the 'Switzerland of the East'.
7.	One of the reasons for our success has been our ability to work with others and to leverage on the complementary strengths of our partners. The current series of negotiations for Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) is a means for Singapore to strengthen its ties with its partners. In a way it is like the Japanese Shakkei 'Borrowed Scenery' strategy. By designing our small garden against the beautiful distant scenery, we make our gardens that much more beautiful.
8.	On its part, SPRING Singapore concluded a Memorandum of Understanding with the Swiss Company Pool in Feb last year. The MOU provides a platform for small and medium-sized enterprises from Switzerland and Singapore to collaborate and for Swiss enterprises to use Singapore as a hub or springboard to expand their businesses into other Asian markets. As a follow-up to the MOU, I led an 11-member delegation of Singapore enterprises to Switzerland in October last year to explore business opportunities with Swiss companies.
9.	Singapore and Switzerland have built a strong foundation for a growing relationship. It can be likened to the Equinox, which coincidentally is the name of the new dining and entertainment place at the top of this hotel where I believe you will be having your lunch tomorrow. Equinox describes the two days in the year when day and night are of equal length and the sun is directly above the equator. Using this analogy, if Singapore is on one side and Switzerland on the other, then our relationship can be described as representing the perfect balance of East and West. Together we can straddle the globe.
Conclusion
10.	In a way I believe Swiss Highlight 2002 will show how much we have in common and how much we can be ideal partners. Singapore and Switzerland = Quality. Singapore and Switzerland = Success. Together we can achieve collective competitiveness. I wish the event every success and I look forward to seeing continued partnership between Singapore and Switzerland. Switzerland of the East? Singapore inspired to be the Switzerland of the East. We want to be a gracious society! In 1984, former PM Goh Chok Tong said he targeted to bring the Swiss standard of living, of that year, 1984, to Singapore by 1999. He claimed to have achieved that goal in the year 2000, delayed by the Asian Financial Crisis.

A measly red dot of an island with a total area of 704 sq km where over 4.68 million people live (and that's still 1.8 million short of the government's target population of 6.5 million).
