S'PORE SHARES DOWN

They tumble to lowest level in 4 months, as does SGD SINGAPORE shares tumbled the most in more than four months yesterday, as worldwide credit concerns provoked a sell-down despite a series of positive earnings reports. The benchmark Straits Times Index closed 3.3 per cent down at 3,431.71. The trigger is the American home mortgage situation. The Dow Jones Industrial is currently supported at 13,200.

SCHOOL PLACEMENT TESTS AWAIT RETURNING SINGAPOREAN STUDENTS

OVERSEAS Singaporeans coming back to enrol in pre-university institutes here will have to sit for an additional paper - a non-content-based general ability paper - on top of the English and mathematics papers.

Such a move, which will assess reasoning and thinking skills, is to "more holistically assess" the candidates, the Ministry of Education (MOE) said in a press release yesterday, as it opened registration for the latest School Placement Exercise for Returning Singaporeans (Spers).

Another change in store for these junior college and Millennia Institute applicants is a revised mathematics paper that will only assess elementary mathematics.

There will be no changes to the Spers test papers - English and mathematics - for those seeking to enter secondary schools, as these papers already include non-content-based general ability items.Now in its second year, Spers was mooted to cut down on the red tape and hassles faced by Singaporeans working overseas who want to re-admit their children into schools here when they return. For instance, their children had to take multiple school-based tests even if there was no certainty of a place, parents had complained.

In a pilot project, the MOE will hold the Spers test in Shanghai on Oct16 - the same test date as in Singapore - "in response to feedback from overseas Singaporeans for the test to be held nearer where they are staying overseas".

The city was chosen as recent data showed that China has the highest number of returning Singaporeans being admitted into schools here, the ministry said. But the initiative will be scrapped if it receives fewer than 20 registrations.

Some 283 applications by returning students were put in last year: 256 for admission into Secondary 1 to 3 and 27 for the first year of pre-university.

The Spers scheme is open only for admissions into these levels. Secondary 4 and JC2 are critical years in the school system and returning students generally would not re-join at these levels, the ministry said.

Those seeking a place at a primary school are guaranteed one at a school with vacancies nearest to their home.

The 151MP boasts its fair amount of great specifications with some improvements over the 150MP. The 151MP has a higher contrast ratio and is brighter. Although it does have some improvements I have have liked to see Samsung include the TV tuner function standard and not have it optional.
